National Policy Committee Update

Late in 2011, Vision 2020 Australia strengthened its national policy committees’ governance. As their first two-year term comes to an end it is worth reflecting on what has been achieved through collaboration. Each committee aligns with Vision 2020 Australia’s strategic goals and focuses on matters relating to prevention and early intervention, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people or low vision and rehabilitation. At recent meetings, committee members reflected on the successes and considered the opportunities, challenges and priorities for 2014 and the incoming committees.

ZEISS supports center for eye doctors in Paraguay

To improve medical care in South America, ZEISS joined forces with the Christian Blind Mission (CBM), the Fundación Visión and the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness(IAPB) to establish a diagnostic, treatment and training center operated by the Fundación Visión.

Professor Brien Holden has been awarded the inaugural Optometry Giving Sight Humanitarian Award in recognition for his outstanding contribution in support of global efforts to help eliminate avoidable blindness and impaired vision and reduce the disability, poverty and lack of opportunity associated with vision loss.

Universal eye health action plan endorsed in WHO high-level meeting

To help eliminate avoidable blindness as a public health problem, the World Health Organization Regional Committee for the Western Pacific has reviewed and endorsed the draft action plan Towards Universal Eye Health: A Regional Action Plan for the Western Pacific (2014–2019).

Sector makes World Sight Day a day to remember

Vision 2020 Australia has been calling for the eye health and vision care sector to get behind World Sight Day over the past few years, and in 2013 this call was well and truly answered with the theme Universal Eye Health and the call to action of ‘Get Your Eyes Tested’ spread far and wide! Our members called on their own members and, together with Members of Parliament, took to traditional and social media to fly the flag for World Sight Day on Thursday, 10 October.

Vision Summits facilitate conversation with Government and Opposition

With the sector’s eyes firmly on the looming Federal Election, Vision 2020 Australia and its member organisations have been campaigning to ensure eye health remains on the agenda of both the Australian Labor Party and the Coalition. On 9 July Vision 2020 Australia held a Vision Summit with the Coalition and last Wednesday a second summit was held with representatives from the Australian Government. More than 40 CEOs from leading eye health and vision care organisations across Australia attended each of the summits to ask questions of federal parliamentarians.
