This submission highlights some potential difficulties people who are blind or have low vision may face following the introduction of the NDIA’s proposed independent assessments process later in 2021. It suggests a solution where independent assessments for this cohort are performed by experts in their needs such as orientation and mobility specialists, orthoptists and occupational therapists. It also proposes that people who qualify for the Disability Support Pention Blind or who can provide equivalent medical evidence should automatically be eligible for the scheme once the access lists which previously defined their eligibility are removed.
